He said: "If no-one had come in for me I would have packed it in because I didn't want to play park football.
"I've got to be realistic because I'm 35 years old but I never thought my career was over.
"I've heard it said that it's a risk taking me on but I don't think it's a gamble. I just want to play football and my aim is to win promotion."
Lions chairman Theo Paphitis said Wise would not receive the £10,000 per week being talked about in some circles.
He said: "The figures quoted in the press have been hugely exaggerated. He will be earning a fraction of what he got at Leicester."
Wise has been handed the numdber 19 shirt at Millwall and should make his Lions debut in the game with Coventry this weekend.
