According to The Scotsman, Millwall have been in contact with Petta's agent with a view to a permanent move after the player failed to agree terms with both Leeds United and Wigan Athletic.
Petta, who was released by Celtic last November, was recently on trial with Premiership side Bolton Wanderers but failed to convince Sam Allardyce that he was worth a contract.
His agent, Peter Harrison, said: "He wants to play in England, preferably in the Premiership, but Southampton and Bolton have decided against signing him.
"I have held talks with Millwall and there’s a good chance something might happen with them."
The Lions have also renewed their interest in West Brom's Neil Clement, although they may face stiff competition for the player's signature from Newcastle United and Crystal Palace.
The club almost signed the defender during the Summer of 2004 but the deal broke down at the last moment.
