The former Manchester united, AC Milan and England player had always said that he would not take the manager's role if Dennis Wise left and informed the club that he will leave as soon as a new boss as been appointed.
Wilkins, who was in his second spell at the club, originally came in to help out Wise during his initial spell in charge before he was handed the manger's position on a permanent basis.
