Whitbread, who joined The Lions last summer, is now set to miss the next six weeks after being advised to rest the injury.
On a brighter note, striker Ben May is available after a groin strain while fellow forward Marvin Williams is also in contention after coming on as a sub in the 4-1 defeat of Brentford on Boxing Day.
As for The Lions other walking wounded, manager Willie Donachie was optimistic about having them all back within a fortnight.
"Hopefully Tony Craig won't be out for much longer," he told the club's official site. "Jody Morris is back in full training and just needs games while Tom Brighton should be back playing in about a fortnight."
