Jackett was hopeful of both players returning in time to face Gillingham on Saturday in what has been billed as a "must win game" by both camps but it now looks like both injuries are worse than first thought.
Whitbread sustained a cracked bone in his shoulder against Luton Town last week and is now unlikely to make it back before the end of the season while Alexander's ankle injury is taking longer to heal than expected thanks to the location of his stitches.
That will leave Jackett with only three fit strikers for the rest of the season and two centre halves, despite hopes that Andy Frampton may be fit in time to face The Gills.
