But he went on to play a major role in the centre-of-the-park as Millwall twice came from behind to win their first away game of the season.
"When I saw him in training on the first day I knew he would be good for us," said McGee.
"There is an enthusiasm about him which is definitely rubbing off on the other players. I thought he was terrific.
"When we were 2-2 he helped us keep our shape and showed that wee bit of authority we have been lacking.
"He showed great control throughout the game. We don't want petulant players. We want people who will compete fairly."
