However, losing to long-time friend Gordon Strachan did not make defeat any easier to bear for the Millwall manager although he admitted he would love to see his mate go on and win the trophy now.

"The fact it's Gordon is totally irrelevant. It will cost him dinner though, certainly.

"Tonight they edged it. At times we worked hard to contain them and we did for a long, long time. But on balance they deserved to go through.

"I'd love Gordon to win it. Southampton have the ambition and I would expect them to have the ability to beat Norwich.

"They could end up having a run to the final playing only First Division teams."
