The victory was the club's first since the FA Cup Semi-Final win over Sunderland at the beginning of April and marked the end of a run which saw The Lions drop out of the race for the play-offs.
Neil Harris scored the all-important goal from the penalty spot after a handball decision which was given by the linesman after referee Rob Styles had waved play on.
Rather than risk several key players, manager Dennis Wise used the game to give a number of fringe players a run-out. Striker John Sutton made his home debut while winger Barry Cogan was given another chance down the right flank. He later gave a first team debut to midfielder Curtis Weston and the match was notable for the return of Joe Dolan from another long spell on the sidelines.
Both the players and supporters will now look forward to the FA Cup showdown with Manchester United, although Wise will have one or two selection headaches, mainly in attack, with Daniele Dichio suspended and Nick Chadwick having returned to Everton after his loan spell.
