Byfield, who was Gillingham's top scorer last season with 14 goals, is set to complete the move today after Gills' chairman Paul Scally admitted defeat in his efforts to keep the player in the Kent Mercury.
The former Rotherham United striker, who once hit four goals against The Lions at The Den, will sign a three-year deal, becoming new boss Nigel Spackman's first signing in the process.
Byfield was first mooted as a possible replacement for Bob Peeters last August and another approach was made in Janaury during the transfer window before the club bought Berry Powel, who ironically left the club earlier this week.
