Both players will offered trials by former manager Steve Claridge and have taken part in The Lions' pre-season campaign but Claridge's dismissal last week has left the pair in limbo.
"I can't keep the boys waiting around because it's not fair to them," Lee told the club's official site.
"I think another club is interested in John so we need to let him know, and in any case, at this stage everybody needs to know the situation with the start of the season almost upon us."
