It's been a while since Millwall have experience any kind of success in the Football League Trophy competition. Since making the final in 1999 the club have pretty much failed to get past round one in the seasons they have entered the tournament but current boss Kenny Jackett knows the kind of springboard effect this competition can have on a club.
When Keith Stevens and Alan McLeary lead The Lions out in the final of the Autowindscreen Shield as it was then known it started an unprecedented run of success for the club, which arguably culminated in an unexpected appearance in the FA Cup Final and the UEFA Cup. And now Jackett wants the same for his side, having won the trophy with Swansea two years ago, and is expected to name an experience team, despite rules allowing clubs to field just eleven first teamers.
"We've got a couple of players with little niggles after Saturday's game, but that apart I'll be looking to name my strongest side," he told the club's official website. "It's important that we carry on where we left off at the weekend. I want to win this game for two reasons.
"Firstly because it's vital that we build on that success and discover the winning habit, and secondly because although it is low key in the early rounds, this competition provides a great opportunity to get to a Wembley final.
"I won this competition with Swansea two years ago, and I'd love to repat that with Millwall."
To try and encourage a bumper ground Millwall are charging just £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s and OAPs, with under-16s gaining free access if accompanied by a paying adult.
