Speaking to the News Shopper, the former Lions manager spoke of his disappointment at being axed but understood why they board made the decision to remove him.
"Stewart (Till) basically told me the board had decided they wanted to make a change," said Donachie.
"I wasn't really shocked by the news because I had an inkling yesterday afternoon something was going on.
"There has been a lot of talk about my job in the press for a couple of weeks now over whether I should still be in the job and the idea begins to get into people's minds once you keep talking about it.
"I'm very disappointed I didn't have the chance to show people at Millwall how I could have been a success at the job.
"The other side to it is the board want the club to do well and from their point of view, I can understand their position."
Chairman Till had come out in support of his under-fire manager on Monday but the response of fans to his backing led to a rethink by the board. Donachie, however, bears no grudge despite moving his family to be closer to the training ground over the summer.
"Millwall has great traditions and a lot of potential to be very successful and I certainly hope they can be."
