Confusion reigns over Savage

Bas Savage began pre-season training with Millwall this week amid rumours of his imminent departure from The Den but the 26-year-old striker was quick to dismiss talk of a move, despite the club's seemingly nonchalant approach to the player's status with The Lions.

"I have reported back for pre-season," he told the Southwark News. "I'm back in training with Millwall and I'm planning to be a part of Kenny's plan for next season by letting my feet do the talking.

"People saying I am up there for training are taking a liberty, that is not the case."

But Chief Operating Office Andy Ambler took a different stance over the player's immediate future, confirming that the club would not stand in his way should anyone express an interest in signing him.

"His current deal expired on July 1 and technically he is able to speak to any other parties," said Ambler. "Kenny Jackett has offered Bas a six-month extension, but the club would not stand in his way should he get a longer offer elsewhere.

"I was aware that Bas was up there talking to Tranmere to see what deal they might offer but we are pleased he has turned up at training with Millwall and is looking to play himself in to Kenny's side.

"But the answer of who he will be training with next week is - I don't know."

Savage has been linked with both Tranmere and Chesterfield in recent weeks and with rumours of Darren Byfield's possible - if unexpected - return to The Den gathering pace, his time with Millwall could be coming to an end.

"You never know in football," continued Savage. "If the manager decides he doesn't want me around and it is time to move on, then I will sit down and listen to any real offers I get."
